Switzerland, dubbed as the “Happiest Place on Earth” is a landlocked country nestled between Italy, France, Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein. With 4 official languages -- German, French, Italian and Romansch-- the tiny nation is known as a
dream. But you don’t have to speak multiple languages to enjoy this beautiful country. With its gorgeous, diverse landscape and a rich cultural history, Switzerland should definitely be on the top of your travel bucket list! To get you started, we have a couple of essential must-do’s for you:
Enjoy The Views at Klein Matterhorn
Klein Matterhorn, also known as Little Matterhorn, is the highest point in Europe accessible by cable-car. But don’t get it confused with the infamous Matterhorn Mountain, which is only open to expert mountain climbers. They are right next to each other, and Klein Matterhorn serves as a public observation point that overlooks Klein Matterhorn and the Monte Rosa massif. At the top, you can enjoy the views from an outdoor or indoor platform, dine at a restaurant with panoramic windows, and even go skiing, snowboarding or snow-tubing year round (even in the summer!). We advise you to be mindful of altitude sickness - as many visitors become nauseous and lightheaded when reaching the top.
Visit the Funky Chocolate Club
Fun fact: milk chocolate was invented in Switzerland! So it makes sense to visit a chocolate shop when you’re there. The Funky Chocolate Club is a storefront in the city of Interlaken that offers tour and workshops on chocolate history and chocolate making. They also offer a variety of fair-trade and organic chocolate in fondue, hot chocolate and bar form! Yum!
Go hiking in the Alps
The Swiss Alps runs through Switzerland, making it a hiker’s paradise. Switzerland offers a variety of hiking trails, that can range in difficulty and in time length. In fact, some trails can last a few hours - and others can last a few days! If you’re planning a trip to Switzerland mainly for hiking, we suggest going in the early summer (when there’s daylist from 5:30 in the morning to 9:30 at night!) or in September when there are less tourists in the area.
Stroll through Chillon Castle
Chillon Castle is located by the shores of Lake Geneva on a rock island. It sits right at the foot of the Alps and is the most visited historical building in Switzerland. It is estimated to be about 1000 years old, with Swiss Counts occupying the castle for more than 400 years! Influenced by three distinct cultural periods, Chillon Castle contains a variety of art and architecture. Now, the castle is open to the public and they organize various performances and exhibitions for its visitors.
