Bucket List | India

India is a country located in South Asia and is known to be the second-most populated country in the world. Bordering Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Myanmar, India is diverse in not only culture, but landscape as well. There are 22 main languages spoken in the country, with over 720 dialects - making the country jam packed with various traditions and people. With this in mind, it’s impossible to do everything on your trip to India. It’s important to prioritize travel activities based on your interests and how much time you have. We’ve compiled a bucket list for you to get a head start!

Taj Mahal

This ivory-white marble mausoleum is a famous icon of the country. The Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, ordered the Taj Mahal to be built in 1632 after the passing of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The building’s focal point is Mumtaz’s tomb, but also includes a grand garden, a mosque and a guest house. Although this site is an extremely busy tourist site, we highly recommend visiting it. It is absolutely as beautiful as they say!

Goa is a unique city - a blend of Portuguese (remnants of when the Portuguese colonized this region) and Indian culture. It’s located on the coast of west India, stretching across the Arabian Sea. Known for its golden-sand beaches and nightlife culture, Goa is definitely a city for those who are young at heart. Whether you’re there for surfing, partying, or beach-hopping, you’re guaranteed to have a great time.

Mumbai is India’s largest city and is the center of the infamous Bollywood film industry. It’s a mix of modern and old, as it holds ancient-old temples as well as new financial and fashion districts. Because Mumbai is a metropolitan hub, it’s a melting pot of cultures across South Asia. That means the food is amazing! We recommend trying out local bites like pani puri, samosa chaat and chai from local shops. Make sure to visit the highly recognized Gateway of India, a monument that was built during British rule. If you have time, visit the local bazaars - they’re full of gorgeous handcrafted jewelry and beautiful, colorful saris.

The Golden Temple

Harmandir Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple, is a sikh temple located in the city of Amritsar. The temple was built in 1577 and is entirely made of pure gold. A manmade lake was also built to border the temple and houses exotic fish from all around the world. This temple is one of the holiest sites in India, drawing in millions of pilgrims and tourists. It’s a marvelous site full of history, and cultural and religious significance. A must see if you’re in India!
